At Google I/O 2016 it was revealed that the Chrome OS will soon support Android apps. This is the end of speculation about the future of the two platforms and brings the millions of apps on the Play Store to Chrome OS starting with the three Chromebooks that use touchscreen displays in June.
It remains to be seen whether this will cause more security issues or if the design of the system, a Linux container on the Chrome operating system that runs a complete version of Android in a locked down environment will be up to the task. The number of different OEMs producing Chromebooks may also be a source of problems. Is there going to be a niche area of mobile app security testing for Android on Chrome?
